A new science fiction superhero movie opened March 8th at theaters across the nation. Captain Marvel is a refreshing change from the conventional male superhero movies. This action-packed movie follows the story of a woman who has found herself in the middle of an intergalactic war. As the war continues to progress, Captain Marvel struggles with her identity as she experiences flashbacks from a different life. As she finds out more about her past, she learns to control her superpowers and help end the war.
The setting and cinematography of Captain Marvel were very well done. The film takes place primarily on Earth, with a few scenes on the planet Kree and other planets. A key part of the setting is the 90’s theme, which includes throwbacks to businesses like Blockbuster and RadioShack. The variety of close ups and long shots keeps the cinematography interesting, but the sometimes-dull lighting occasionally pulls the viewer out of the film.
One of the most impressive feats of this film is the incredible visual effects. During the battle scenes, the explosions and Captain Marvel’s energy manipulation are beautifully displayed through computer generated imagery (CGI). The addition of color and special effects to numerous settings and situations enhances the overall quality of the movie, especially the background environments that have the potential to be bland. The use of these effects strengthens the appearance of the characters, scenery, and objects, and provides the viewer with an immersive experience that is one of the best in theaters today.
This film also provides an enjoyable amount of humor throughout the film. The light-hearted, humorous dialogue between some of the characters, such as Captain Marvel and Nick Fury, is well written and establishes chemistry. The two become a dynamic duo and provide the audience with characters to latch onto. Their blossoming friendship in this film is an important lead in for the upcoming Marvel movie Avengers: Endgame. This extra humor and character chemistry within the film make the movie much more enjoyable.
The final action scenes of Captain Marvel are breathtaking. The thrilling sensation of the end battle demonstrates the newfound abilities of Captain Marvel and end the movie with a powerful and uplifting resolution. The development of Captain Marvel’s character is evident by the way her fighting evolves and the way that her emotional stability matures from the beginning of the movie. These concluding action scenes allow for the audience to remain entertained, while also showcasing the development of Captain Marvel’s character and concluding the film.
Overall, this movie was engaging and very entertaining. We rate it 5 stars out of 5.
