“Is there a man in the world who suffers as I do from the gross inadequacies of the human race?” - Sheridan Whiteside.
The first time the beloved play The Man Who Came to Dinner premiered was on Broadway in 1939. Written by Moss Hart and George Kaufman, the plot follows an opinionated radio broadcaster named Sheridan Whiteside, played in EAHS’s performance by Carter Rutkowski (11), who injures himself after slipping on a sheet of ice and later finds himself invited to come to the residence of the Stanley family. Things take a turn when Whiteside’s assistant, Maggie Cutler, played by Claire Fritz (11), falls in love with the well-respected local news reporter Bert Jefferson and decides to leave her job. “Maggie, is a bit cynical at times but she can be very caring with the people who she is friends with,” says Claire Fritz, who plays Maggie Cutler. “It is a battle of wits between my character Maggie and Westside, but [the play] is mostly just a comedy.” The play continues with many crazy jijinx occur with Mr. Whiteside and the other characters, including him hiring an actress to try and lure Bert away from Maggie which gets into some trouble later on. The play will run November 1st at 7:00 pm and November 3rd at 1:00 pm and 7:00 pm. Tickets can be purchased at the door.
