Cuphead, Super Mario Odyssey, Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, Persona 5, and Sonic Mania: we played them all and we are here to review them.
Coming in at our #5 spot is Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. This came out on January 24th, 2017. This game has an 87% on Metacritic and a 7.9/10 on GameSpot. Resident Evil 7 is one of the best horror games of 2017. Players assume the role of Ethan Winters, whose wife disappeared suddenly and who, for almost 10 years, assumed she was dead until one day receiving a videotape with her on it. The videotape gives Ethan hope of finding his lost wife. The game follows his (your) search for your missing wife through encounters with monsters and the sinister Baker family. This game has beautiful graphics and a compelling story. The game is available for PC, PS4, PSVR, and Xbox One. The #4 spot goes to Persona 5. It came out September 15th, 2017. This game has received a 9.7/10 on IGN and a 93% on Metacritic. As Persona starts, players are immediately introduced to the story. You play as “Joker”, a Phantom Thief, who is trying to escape a casino. As the story progresses, you can name your character and he reveals more about the game’s story and universe. In addition, you meet more characters and help more bad guys become better by going into a thing called the “metaverse” (a universe for people's inner struggles, desires, and shadows). Also, you make “personas” (power within) and get a “love life” within everything you do. Having stats will determine how people will see you and whether or not your partners should trust you. This game takes a while to complete, but it is thrilling. It came out on the PS4 and PS3. The #3 goes to Sonic Mania, which came out August 15th, 2017. It has an 8.7/10 on IGN and 86% on Metacritic. In this, you can pick between the blue hedgehog, Sonic, the two-tailed fox, Tails, and the echidna, Knuckles. Their separate stories eventually merge. This game brings back some of the old levels like “Green Hill” and “Chemical Plant” from the original Sonic the Hedgehog. It also brings back the same type of graphics that the original games had. This nostalgic aspect to the game was a lot of fun (because it brings back the older maps) and it is quite rage filled (if you die a lot). It came out on PS4, Xbox One, PC, and the Nintendo Switch. The #2 spot goes to Super Mario Odyssey, which came out on October 27th, 2017. This game has a 10/10 on IGN and a 97% in Metacritic. Super Mario Odyssey is probably one of the best Mario games in the past 10 years. It is a combination of a large number of aspects of all the past Mario games (such as 2d platforming mechanics from Super Mario and 3d platforming from Super Mario Galaxy) all mixed in with the new game and mechanics. The plot for this Mario is that Bowser has stolen Princess Peach and he intends to marry her. He also steals the sister of a being named Cappy. Cappy has the ability to transform into any hat design or style as well as be a useful tool to help chase Bowser. Mario travels across the planet in a ship called the Odyssey. This ship is powered by power moons, which Mario collects in order to fully power the ship to fight Bowser. There are many levels along the way and many bosses, but the four most noticeable are the Broodals, which are hideous bunny creatures. Once you defeat each one of these bosses, each three times total in the game, you are finally ready to fight Bowser. The #1 game goes to Cuphead and it came out on September 29th, 2017. This game has a 10/10 on Steam and a 4.5/5 on Microsoft. In Cuphead, you follow the main character, Cuphead, and his brother, Mugman, as they deal with hunting down soul contracts for the devil. The collection of said contracts is no easy task, as the contract holders turn into monsters that Cuphead and Mugman must defeat in order to obtain win the contract. This game’s sinister undertone is masked by the innocent facade of a 1930’s cartoon. The game is actually an amazing platformer RPG (Role Play Game) where the character must fight through levels or fight the bosses to obtain the contracts. This game is out for PC and XBox 1. The games this year were big and hotly anticipated, and they delivered. These games gave horror, RPG, platformers, and story-filled games a whole new direction. Hopefully, next year’s games will continue the trend of exceeding expectations.
